Inidividual Behavior and Social Status

The literature has shown a connection between an individual's behavior and his or her social status has long been known to be related to cigarette smoking. Even though much research shows that smoking while pregnant can adversely affect the fetus, low-income women still have higher rates of smoking before, during, and after pregnancy than women of middle and high socioeconomic status.

The percentage of children in poor families has risen significantly in recent years and statistics from the United States Census Bureau revealed that, in 2001, a third of all children live in improverish conditions which is the root cause of many health problems that infants and chidren face. Because of the relationship between socioeconomic status and health behaviors, these children are born into a legacy of poor health behaviors, such a smoking and drinking and drug abuse during pregnancy, continuing the cycle.
